Supermassive black holes dance in a non-active galaxy
An international research team has discovered the first pair of supermassive black holes in orbit around one another in a quiescent galaxy.
An international research team, including Stefanie Komossa from the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in Bonn, Germany, has discovered a pair of supermassive black holes in orbit around one another. This is the first time such a pair could be found in an ordinary galaxy. They were discovered because they ripped apart a star when the European Space Agency’s (ESA) XMM-Newton space observatory happened to be looking in their direction. Most massive galaxies in the universe are thought to harbor at least one supermassive black hole at their center. Two supermassive black holes are the smoking gun that the galaxy has merged with another. Thus, finding binary supermassive black holes can tell astronomers about how galaxies evolved into their present-day shapes and sizes.

On June 11th 1963, Thích Quảng Đức, a Vietnamese Buddhist monk, sat down in the middle of a busy intersection in Saigon, covered himself in gasoline and he then ignited a match, and set himself on fire. Đức burned to death in a matter of minutes, and he was immortalized in a famous photograph taken by a reporter who was in Vietnam in order to photograph the war. All those who saw this spectacle were taken by the fact that Duc did not make a sound while burning to death. Đức was protesting President Ngô Đình Diệm’s administration for oppressing the Buddhist religion.

holy shit.

I was waiting for this to come up on my dash. You also can’t forget that his whole body burned, but his heart remained intact and did not burn.
